The valve needs to be located ABOVE the waterline, it doesn't matter where as long as its above.

The pump fills the ballast tank up to the horizontal baffle, any over fill simply goes out of the vent.

To surface, simply reverse the pump. The valve allows a small amount of water to re-enter the ballast tank when surfacing and that leak is important as it allows the pump to work. If there is a perfect seal then you will get a hydraulic lock and this will prevent the pump from emptying the tank.

As the tank is emptying, a negative pressure is generated within the ballast tank and this will be equalised as soon as the valve breaks surface. The horizontal baffle plate gives a small reserve of air so that the pump can prime and also prevents water surge.

The battery slot is designed to use the Tamiya buggy style of 7.2v battery (I use 3.3ah NMH)

I use speed controls for both motor and pump (for simplicity) and the MTronics micro marine Vipers are perfect for the job.
Keep the red "O" rings well greased (I use PTFE grease) or they can become difficult to pull off (Silicone grease will make the rings swell up)
